For those individuals want to have their teeth whitened, it should be understood that there are some significant differences between professional teeth whitening procedures and home based teeth whiting products.  Once the differences about the different teeth whitening options are known, the individual can then determine what the best course of action is in terms of whitening their teeth.  Below, the major differences between professional teeth whitening in a dentist’s office and over-the-counter teeth whitening systems are examined.

In a dentists office, a patient may find that they are paying a significant amount for teeth whitening.  Per arch, a patient can pay anywhere from 200-300 dollars, depending on the dentist.  In contrast, home-based whitening systems are considerably less money.  Why the major difference in terms of cost?  First, when a patient visits the dentist’s office they are not only paying for the teeth whitening procedure, but they are also paying for the dentist’s time and skill.  A dentist will ensure that the whitening process remains safe, that the patient’s soft tissue is not damaged.  Moreover, the dentist will ensure that the product being used to whiten teeth will not damage the patient’s tooth enamel; a strong possibility when a patient is using an over-the-counter teeth whitening system and they purchase one that has too much peroxide or the product is extremely acidic.

In a dentists office, the patient has a tray that is created specifically for their mouth.  After the tray is created, only then is the whitener applied.  In contrast, a home based teeth whitener has a generic, one-size-fits-all tray.  The use of a loose tray can cause more of the whitening product to come in contact with the soft tissues in the mouth and to subsequently cause gum irritation.
